The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Wildlife Development Department, recorded a “coral shrimp” belonging to the genus Pliopontonia during monitoring and survey activities conducted by the Department’s marine scientific team to study biodiversity and the components of the marine environment in the State of Qatar.
This species of shrimp lives within brain corals, where its coloration and external appearance help it camouflage and conceal itself among coral formations, making it more difficult to observe and record during field surveys.
The recording of the “coral shrimp” forms part of the Ministry’s efforts to document marine organisms inhabiting Qatari waters and identify their species, characteristics, and natural habitats, while also enhancing the scientific database on marine biodiversity in the State.
The recording of this species reflects the diversity of organisms found in Qatar’s marine environment, including species associated with marine ecosystems that contribute to their stability and the preservation of their natural balance.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change continues to conduct studies, field surveys, and monitoring of marine habitats and organisms with the aim of enhancing scientific knowledge of biodiversity, supporting efforts to protect the marine environment, and conserving and sustainably managing its natural resources
