As part of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s ongoing efforts to protect the marine environment and conserve its natural resources, as well as strengthen oversight of fishing activities, the Marine Protection Department detected a number of violations involving the transportation, possession, and use of prohibited fishing gear and equipment.
The violations detected included the use and possession of directed light spotlights aimed at the sea surface to attract and catch fish. Such equipment is prohibited from being used, installed, or carried onboard vessels and boats in accordance with the applicable regulations and legislation.
The Ministry affirmed that the necessary legal measures had been taken against the violators in accordance with the relevant legislation, noting that the prohibition of such equipment forms part of efforts to protect the marine environment and biodiversity, conserve fish stocks and the State’s natural resources, and curb practices that may adversely affect the sustainability of marine ecosystems.
The Ministry emphasized that marine inspection and monitoring campaigns will continue on a regular basis to strengthen compliance with environmental laws and requirements, reduce violations, and ensure that fishing activities are conducted responsibly and sustainably, thereby contributing to the protection of the marine environment and the conservation of its natural resources.
