Building on its vision of the importance of supporting vegetation cover and preserving the environment, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in cooperation with the Friends of the Environment Centre, participated in a campaign to plant native vegetation and clean Umm Al Amad Rawdat, coinciding with Arab Agriculture Day.
The Ministry was represented in the campaign by the Wildlife Development Department, with the participation of students from Al Andalus Schools Complex and Ali bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani Secondary School. The activity included planting 300 wild seedlings of native species suitable for Qatar’s environment, in addition to sowing seeds of local wild plants at several sites within the rawdat. These efforts contribute to supporting plant diversity and enhancing opportunities for the natural regeneration of vegetation cover.
In a statement on the occasion, Mr. Ahmed Manoakh Al Anzi, Wildlife Specialist at the Wildlife Development Department, affirmed that the campaign forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate natural environments and preserve terrestrial rawdats, which are considered important natural habitats in the State of Qatar. He noted that involving students in such field initiatives contributes to developing their environmental awareness, strengthening their connection with the local environment, and instilling a sense of responsibility towards protecting it.
Al Anzi explained that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change continues to implement programs and initiatives aimed at developing natural vegetation cover and expanding green areas through the use of native plant species. These efforts are accompanied by promoting a culture of preserving rawdats and protecting them from negative practices that could affect their sustainability and biodiversity.
For his part, Mr. Adnan Al Balushi, Representative of the Friends of the Environment Centre, expressed his pleasure at cooperating with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in implementing the campaign, stressing the importance of integrating efforts between government institutions and civil society organisations in supporting environmental initiatives and enhancing community participation in the protection of natural resources.
He noted that students’ participation in field-based environmental activities provides them with an educational and practical experience that contributes to instilling the concepts of sustainability, teamwork, and environmental volunteering, while introducing them to the importance of preserving vegetation cover and natural habitats. This helps prepare a generation that is more aware of environmental issues and better equipped to contribute to protecting Qatar’s environment.
The campaign forms part of the awareness and field programs and initiatives implemented by the Friends of the Environment Centre in cooperation with various entities, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness, encouraging positive behaviors towards natural resources, and motivating members of the community, particularly younger generations, to actively participate in protecting rawdats and preserving their cleanliness and sustainability.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Friends of the Environment Centre continue to implement joint initiatives and programs that contribute to raising environmental awareness and expanding community participation in protecting the environment and conserving its natural resources for future generations, thereby supporting national efforts to achieve sustainable development.
