The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), represented by the Marine Protection Department, detected four fishing dhows during a nighttime inspection patrol and seized a number of prohibited fishing gear found on board. The confiscated equipment included non-compliant nylon fishing nets and “Al-Khiyah” nets, as part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight of marine activities and protect Qatar’s living aquatic resources.
The seizure was carried out during the Department’s routine inspection campaigns, which are conducted regularly to ensure that fishermen and sea users comply with the environmental regulations and requirements governing fishing activities. These inspections also aim to curb the use of prohibited fishing gear and unlawful practices that may negatively affect the marine environment and fish stocks.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its inspection and enforcement campaigns, including nighttime patrols, to detect violations and illegal practices and to take the necessary legal measures in accordance with the laws and regulations in force in the State.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change also stressed the importance of fishermen and sea users using only approved fishing gear and avoiding practices that may harm marine organisms and their habitats. It emphasized that protecting the marine environment and conserving natural resources is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of all members of society.
