The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), represented by the Wildlife Development Department, recorded 67 Hawksbill sea turtle nests at Fuwairit Beach during the 2026 nesting season, while 3,875 hatchlings successfully emerged and reached the sea.
The Ministry reported that the overall results of the 2026 nesting season across the State recorded approximately 284 nesting events at seven major nesting sites along Qatar’s northern coastline, compared to 219 nesting events during the previous season, representing an increase of 65 nesting events.
Throughout the season, the Ministry carried out comprehensive conservation activities, including monitoring nesting sites, protecting nests, supervising the hatching process and the safe movement of hatchlings to the sea, collecting biological and environmental data, tagging sea turtles, tracking their movements, and utilizing the findings to further enhance conservation programs.
Fuwairit Beach is considered one of the most important nesting sites for Hawksbill sea turtles in the State of Qatar, owing to the protection measures implemented there, which provide a safe nesting environment while minimizing sources of disturbance and artificial nighttime lighting that could affect nesting activities or hinder hatchlings from reaching the sea.
The Ministry continues to implement the National Sea Turtle Conservation Project, which was launched in 2003 in cooperation with Qatar University and with the support of QatarEnergy. The project aims to protect Hawksbill sea turtles and their natural habitats while enhancing the survival prospects of this species, which is globally classified as Endangered.
